Understanding UPSC Cutoff Trends
How UPSC cutoff is calculated
The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) determines the cutoff based on several factors including the number of vacancies, the difficulty level of the paper, and the total number of candidates appearing for the exam. The Prelims cutoff is based solely on GS Paper I, provided the candidate scores at least 33% in GS Paper II (CSAT).
Prelims vs Mains cutoff
Prelims cutoff is the minimum score required to qualify for the Mains examination. It acts as a screening test and its marks are not counted in the final merit list. The Mains cutoff, however, determines who qualifies for the Interview stage. The Final cutoff is the aggregate of marks secured in the Mains written exam and the Personality Test (Interview).
UPSC tie-breaking rules
When two or more candidates secure equal aggregate marks in the CSE, the tie is broken by prioritizing candidates with higher marks in the Compulsory Papers and the Personality Test combined. If the tie persists, the candidate senior in age is ranked higher.
