Shobhika Pathak Preparation Strategy & Insights

Background\n\nI still remember the day I decided to take the UPSC CSE exam. It was a mix of excitement and nervousness, but I was determined to crack it. I had always been fascinated by the world of governance and public administration, and I wanted to be a part of it.\n\nMy Optional Subject: Sociology\n\nI chose Sociology as my optional subject because I found it fascinating and relevant to the current times. I had studied it in college, and I felt confident that I could excel in it.\n\n### Study Plan\n\nMy study plan was quite rigorous. I started preparing for the exam six months before the actual date. I created a detailed schedule, allocating specific time slots for each subject and topic. I also made sure to allocate time for revision and practice.\n\n- 6 Months Before the Exam: I started by revising the entire syllabus, making notes and creating a concept map.

  • 3 Months Before the Exam: I started practicing mock tests and previous year papers to get a feel of the actual exam.
  • 1 Month Before the Exam: I focused on revising my notes and practicing weak areas.

Challenges\n\nThere were several challenges that I faced during my preparation. One of the biggest challenges was time management. With a full-time job and other commitments, it was difficult to allocate enough time for studying. I had to be very disciplined and stick to my schedule.\n\nAnother challenge was dealing with self-doubt and anxiety. There were times when I felt overwhelmed and unsure if I was doing enough. But I didn't give up. I kept pushing myself, and I eventually saw progress.\n\n### Strategies\n\nMy strategy was to align my notes with PYQ trends. I made sure to study the topics that were frequently asked in previous years and to create one-pager notes for every topic. This helped me to stay focused and to revise my notes efficiently.\n\n- One-Pager Notes: I created one-pager notes for every topic, summarizing the key points and concepts.

  • PYQ Trends: I studied the previous year papers and identified the topics that were frequently asked.
  • Mock Tests: I practiced mock tests to get a feel of the actual exam and to identify my weak areas.

Interview Experience\n\nThe interview experience was nervewracking. I was nervous about the questions and the panelists. But I was prepared. I had practiced answering common interview questions and I was confident in my knowledge.\n\nThe interview was a mix of easy and tough questions. I was asked about my optional subject, Sociology. I was asked to explain the concept of social stratification and to provide examples from real-life scenarios.\n\n### Success\n\nI was overjoyed when I heard the results. I had secured All India Rank 37, and I was the topper in my optional subject, Sociology. It was a moment of pure elation.\n\nLooking back, I realize that my success was not just about my hard work and dedication. It was also about my ability to stay focused and motivated. I learned the importance of self-discipline and consistent effort.
