Preparation Strategy
Background
I come from a family of modest means, and my parents always encouraged me to pursue my dreams. I was fascinated by mathematics from a young age and excelled in it throughout my school days. I knew that I wanted to pursue a career in civil services, and mathematics was my optional subject of choice.
Study Plan
I started preparing for the UPSC CSE exam about 2 years before the actual exam date. I created a detailed study plan that included a mix of theory and practice. I focused on completing my syllabus for the general studies paper first and then moved on to the mathematics optional paper. I used a combination of NCERT textbooks, standard reference books, and online resources to prepare for the exam.
Challenges
One of the biggest challenges I faced during my preparation was balancing my studies with my part-time job. I had to work for about 6 months to support my family, and it was tough to manage my time effectively. However, I was determined to crack the exam, and I made sure to allocate dedicated time for studying every day.
Strategies
- Focus on conceptual understanding: I made sure to understand the concepts behind each topic rather than just memorizing formulas and equations.
- Practice, practice, practice: I practiced a lot of previous year question papers and mock tests to get a feel of the actual exam.
- Join a study group: I joined a study group of like-minded individuals who were also preparing for the UPSC CSE exam. We used to study together, discuss our doubts, and motivate each other.
Interview Experience
My interview experience was quite smooth. The panel asked me a mix of general awareness and mathematics-related questions. I was well-prepared for the interview, and I could answer most of the questions confidently.
Success
I attribute my success to my hard work, dedication, and the right strategy. I was consistent in my preparation, and I never gave up, even when things got tough. I also believe that having a strong support system, including family and friends, played a crucial role in my success. If you're preparing for the UPSC CSE exam, my advice would be to stay focused, work hard, and never lose sight of your goal.
